Delhi Rises to Dangerous Smog Post Diwali

Tuesday brought residents of the world's most polluted city found themselves inhaling severely hazardous air that registered in the "alarming" category.

Record-Breaking Pollution Levels

Multiple areas of the city recorded an pollution measurement above 500, which represents 10x the safe level recommended by the global health authority.

Particular areas, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1,800, equating to 15 to 20 times exceeding safe standards.

Fireworks Ban and Recent Changes

Beginning in 2020, authorities had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the hazardous smog that blankets the metropolis as the cold season approaches.

Yet earlier this year, the recently formed local leadership petitioned the highest court to seek a easing of the ban.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously doubted by environmentalists as being only about 30% less polluting – as a balance between "cultural practices and public health".

Court Verdict and Reality

Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, judicial authorities complied with the appeal, specifying that green firecrackers could be ignited during specific hours throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was extensive flouting of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with minimal regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener type.

Many air quality sensors throughout the capital showed contamination peaking around late evening to extremely hazardous levels observed during the festival in at least recent memory.

Regional Consequences

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the festival also triggered a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating pollution levels in the city of Lahore on pollutants traveling from India following the celebrations.

Persistent Environmental Crisis

Alarmingly severe concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the capital have continued as a significant problem for fifteen-plus years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.

Around Diwali, the concentration of toxic airborne contaminants in the air has been found to shoot up to seventy percent above the most severe records ever documented in China's capital, which was once viewed as the globally most contaminated city.

Various Contamination Sources

This crisis in Delhi is resulting from a mix of different contributors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, building projects, rubbish burning and haze from crop residue ignition in adjacent states of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, agricultural workers regularly set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, creating toxic haze that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as colder air sets in.

Public Health and Economic Toll

Public health and economic impact on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants residing in the capital region is enormous, according to various investigations.

The contaminated air leads to elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing disorders, and can result in malignancies.

The pollution is calculated to be accounting for approximately 10k untimely mortalities each year in the capital.
